Trends That Just Need to STOP!
March 1, 2019
Okay, here goes. I just can’t stand it anymore. Here are a few of the things that have been getting my design goat lately. These trends have long overstayed their welcome.
50 Shades of Over it.
Gray, pewter, greige or whatever name the paint companies try to assign. I for one am totally over it. Once unexpected, the color has now become so expected in today’s interiors it has just become a cliche. I admit, at one time I was a HUGE fan of gray. This was before I saw it used in every other post in interior design applications. Still a fan? Try using it in a different way. Pair it with a clean, crisp wall color. Then go for a bold gray used as a trim color.
(Lack Of) Personality Infusion
Grey and white white kitchens. There, I said it. Once considered “timeless”, the exhausting overuse of white cabinets and carrara marble is presenting itself as anything but timeless. There are so many cabinet colors to choose from! As a kitchen designer I cannot, for the life of me, figure out why everyone wants the same look. I spent a week at a design show last week and looked at everyone’s latest version of carrara quartz. How many versions do we need?? There are so many beautiful materials to choose from. Infuse a little personality into your space.
Skip the Design Subway
Subway tile. Yep, I said that too. I once thought this pattern was so classic it would always be on point. The problem is it has been so overused that it screams 2016. All sizes, all colors, just plain overdone. Watching design shows on television I can just about predict what the “designer” is going to select on every back-splash and every shower wall. Yep, subway tile. Your home should be a reflection of you and your personality, not what some design t.v. personality is telling you will get a good price for your remodel.
