Serious Subway Tiles!

As many of you may know, I spend many of my waking hours in one of our city’s largest kitchen and bath showrooms. I talk with a multitude of customers who are looking for the perfect kitchen back-splash to compliment their awesome new kitchen. By far the number one request is for the classic subway tile, white, biscuit, almond, gloss, matte, you know what I’m saying.

While yes, it is truly classic, unless designed with some very special details, it can also be quite boring. I did not realize how much so until I began to search for images for this post! I scrolled through so many pages of classic white or almond installations you would think every kitchen in America had one!

On one of my good days I can send a customer out the door with something completely different! Come on! There are so many beautiful choices out there now, don’t settle for boring!  I chose to show the kiwi green above for those of you who like a pop of color. If you search a bit there are so many colors and finishes available. Not so brave? Pump up the volume with a neutral field tile and run band or two of color or bright glass through the design.

Subway is available in so many alternative sizes now too!  Try a 4×8 or 4×12! One great advantage of these sizes is they look fresh and modern and you will not have as many grout lines! Install them in a vertical direction, try a herringbone pattern or  alternate colors , the possibilities are endless. If you re not feeling that daring yet you can simply change the pattern in one area, over the cook top, behind the sink or both!

Have fun, be inventive and show some personality. After all, you are the one who has to live with it each day!
